Clear, transparent pricing: per-session fees, voucher grants, and how mediation protects family assets.
How mediation is charged

Per session, per person. Each of you pays for your own place, so a couple sharing the cost pays half each rather than one covering the whole. The MIAM is charged separately because it is a single meeting attended individually.
Session fees in this area generally sit between 120 and 180 pounds per person for a ninety minute session, with the MIAM charged at a similar rate. The written documents at the end, the memorandum of understanding and the open financial statement, are usually charged as a single fee rather than by the hour.
The Family Mediation Voucher Scheme

The Ministry of Justice scheme contributes up to 500 pounds towards the cost of mediation where the case involves arrangements for children. It is applied per case rather than per person, and it is not means tested, so income does not affect eligibility.
The voucher is claimed by the mediation service on your behalf. It covers child arrangements. Where a case involves both children and finances, the voucher applies to the child element. We check eligibility at the enquiry stage, before any fee is taken.
Legal aid

Legal aid remains available for family mediation for those who qualify financially, which is no longer true for most other family legal work. Where one party is eligible, the MIAM is free for both of you, and the eligible party's mediation sessions are covered.
Eligibility is assessed on income and capital. It is worth checking even if you assume you would not qualify, particularly if you are on a low income, receive certain benefits, or have limited savings. The assessment costs nothing.
What is not included

The consent order. A solicitor drafts it and files it with the court, and that is charged separately, commonly between 500 and 900 pounds plus the court fee. Budget for it from the start rather than discovering it at the end, because it is the step that makes a financial agreement binding and skipping it leaves you without one.
Also separate: pension actuarial reports where needed, property valuations, and any independent legal advice you take alongside mediation. Taking advice is sensible and we encourage it; the mediator cannot advise either of you.
The comparison that actually matters

The session fee is the number people compare, and it is the wrong one. A contested financial remedy case commonly costs between 15,000 and 40,000 pounds per party once counsel is instructed and the three hearing structure has run its course. Contested child arrangements proceedings frequently reach 10,000 to 20,000 pounds per party.
A five session financial mediation, including the write-up and a consent order, generally lands between 1,500 and 2,500 pounds in total across both parties. That is not a saving of degree. It is a different order of expense, and the outcome is one you designed rather than one imposed.
Where mediation costs more than expected
When disclosure is incomplete and sessions have to be repeated. When one party cancels late. When an expert is needed, most often an actuary for a defined benefit pension or a forensic accountant for a business. Those costs are real and they are still substantially below the equivalent in litigation, where the same experts are instructed anyway and a barrister is added.
Paying
Most services take payment per session rather than in advance for the whole process, which means you are never committed further than the next meeting. If you and your ex-partner have very different incomes, an unequal split of the mediation cost can be agreed between you, and it is a reasonable thing to raise at the MIAM.
Is it worth it if we might not agree
Partial agreement is a good outcome and it is common. If you settle the children and not the finances, you have removed the most emotionally difficult issues from any court process. A hearing on two questions is far shorter, and far cheaper, than a hearing on ten.
And if the assessment concludes that mediation is not suitable for your situation, you will be told at the MIAM rather than after several paid sessions. The mediator signs the court form, and your application proceeds without further cost here.
What a typical case actually costs, end to end
It helps to see the whole figure rather than the session rate.
A child arrangements case: two MIAMs, then three joint sessions, plus the written parenting plan. Across both parties that is commonly 900 to 1,400 pounds in total. Where the voucher applies it removes up to 500 pounds of that.
A financial case: two MIAMs, four joint sessions, the memorandum of understanding and the open financial statement. Commonly 1,600 to 2,400 pounds across both parties. Then a consent order drafted by a solicitor, between 500 and 900 pounds plus the court fee.
So a full financial settlement through mediation, including making it legally binding, typically lands between 2,200 and 3,500 pounds shared between two people. That is the number to compare against, and it is the one most services do not publish.
What the alternative costs
A contested financial remedy case commonly runs to 15,000 to 40,000 pounds per party once a solicitor is instructed throughout and counsel is briefed for hearings. Contested child arrangements proceedings frequently reach 10,000 to 20,000 pounds per party.
Those are per party, not shared. The gap between mediating and litigating a financial settlement is routinely more than ten times, and the litigated outcome is decided by someone who has met your family for a few hours.
Costs people do not anticipate
A pensions on divorce expert report, where a defined benefit scheme forms a material part of the settlement. Typically 1,000 to 2,500 pounds. It is frequently the best value item in the whole process, because it regularly changes the settlement by considerably more than it costs.
A pension sharing implementation charge, levied by the scheme itself when the order is put into effect. Some schemes charge several hundred pounds. Agree who pays it during mediation rather than discovering it afterwards.
A formal property valuation where market appraisals disagree. Two to four hundred pounds.
The court fee for the consent order application, payable on filing.
Independent legal advice alongside mediation
A mediator cannot advise either of you, so many people take independent advice at two points: before agreeing anything significant, and before signing the consent order. A single advice appointment is far cheaper than instructing a solicitor to conduct a negotiation, and it is money well spent.
Budget one to three hours of solicitor time each. It is the difference between an agreement you understand and one you hope is fair.
Splitting the cost unevenly
Nothing requires an equal split. Where incomes differ substantially, couples frequently agree that the higher earner pays a larger share, or all, of the mediation cost. It is a reasonable thing to raise at the MIAM, and it is often the first thing two separating people manage to agree on.
Where the agreement is that one party pays, that can also be reflected in the final settlement rather than paid out of pocket at the time.
Paying as you go
Most services charge per session rather than taking a block fee, which means you are never committed further than the next meeting. If a service asks for the whole process in advance, ask why.
What you get for it that a court does not provide
The agreement is designed by the two people who understand the family, rather than by a judge choosing between two positions. It can include arrangements a court has no power to order. It is reached in weeks rather than months. And the process itself lowers conflict rather than raising it, which is the part that matters most if you are going to be co-parenting with this person for another decade.
Getting a straight quote
Ask four questions before booking anything, and the answers should come without hesitation.
What is the MIAM fee, and is it per person. What is the joint session fee, per person per session, and how long is a session. What is charged for the written documents at the end, and is that a fixed sum or hourly. And is anything else billed separately, such as correspondence between sessions or the time spent preparing.
A service that answers those four in writing has given you a budget. A service that quotes an hourly rate for everything has given you an unknown, and on a process with a natural tendency to expand, that difference is worth a great deal.
Where the money is genuinely well spent
The single best value item in most financial cases is an expert pension report where a defined benefit scheme is involved. It routinely changes the settlement by many times its cost, and the party who would have been worse off is usually the one who did not know to ask for it.
The second is independent legal advice before signing. An hour with a solicitor who tells you plainly whether what you have agreed is within the range a court would approve is the cheapest insurance in the process.
The third is an extra session where one is needed. Cases that end one session early, with a point left loosely worded because everyone was tired, are the cases that come back.
Budgeting for the whole thing at the start
Write down four figures before you begin: the MIAM, the likely number of sessions multiplied by the session fee, the document fee, and the consent order. Add the voucher as a deduction if it applies. That total is the number to plan against, and having it in front of you removes the low level anxiety that comes from an open ended cost.
Revisit it after the second session, when the mediator has a real sense of how many meetings the case needs. By that point the estimate is usually accurate to within one session, and if the case is going to run longer than expected it is far better to know then than at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Services in Aylesbury
Do we pay upfront for all mediation sessions?
No. Sessions are paid individually as they occur, giving you complete control over your budget at every step.
Is the MIAM fee included in the voucher scheme?
The voucher scheme applies to substantive joint mediation sessions; individual MIAM assessments are booked and paid separately unless eligible for Legal Aid.
What is the total average cost of completing mediation?
Most couples spend between £1,000 and £1,800 total combined to achieve a full mediated settlement across children and financial assets.
How do mediation costs compare to contested court litigation?
A contested family court case typically costs between £15,000 and £30,000 per party, representing an 85% to 90% higher cost than mediation.
Are document drafting fees charged separately?
Preparation of the final Memorandum of Understanding and Open Financial Summary is charged at a transparent fixed fee agreed prior to drafting.
Can session costs be paid using split methods?
Yes. Each party pays their individual portion independently via debit card, credit card, or bank transfer.
Is the cost different for shuttle mediation?
Somewhat higher, because every exchange has to be carried between two rooms and sessions therefore run longer, commonly two to three hours rather than ninety minutes. The comparison worth making is against proceedings rather than against joint sessions, since joint sessions were not available in those circumstances.
Who pays if one of us earns considerably more?
Nothing requires an equal split, and where incomes differ substantially couples frequently agree that the higher earner pays a larger share or all of it. It can also be reflected in the final settlement rather than paid at the time.
Are there costs beyond the mediator's fees?
For financial cases, usually three: independent legal advice, the solicitor's charge for drafting the consent order, and the court fee for filing it. Where a defined benefit pension is involved, an expert report is a further cost and frequently the best value item in the whole process.
What happens to the money already spent if we do not agree?
Fees are charged for the sessions held, and nothing is repayable. Partial agreement is common and is not a wasted process: a case arriving at court with most matters settled is substantially narrower, and that difference is reflected in what the proceedings then cost.
